The Election Is Over, Now What?

As Election Day 2012 has come and gone, many Christians have been left in disbelief after having learned that President Obama has been re-elected for another four-years. Feelings ranging from sadness and anger, to sheer hopelessness has seemed to be the general mood reeling throughout the Christian church. As many are struggling to comprehend how to move forward, I would like to pass on an article that was written by my Senior Pastor, Todd Hudnall, to our congregation this morning. I believe it may help those who are wondering, “The Election is Over, Now What?” Pastor Steve

The Election Is Over, Now What?

America has decided and Barack Obama has been entrusted with four more years as President of the United States. Now that it’s over, let’s analyze the implications of the election.

First I want to express my gratitude and appreciation for the people of Radiant Church who engaged in our 21-days of prayer and fasting. I also want to thank those of you who participated in our Gap prayer services. I had a sense from the beginning, that more important than the outcome, was our willingness to call out to God for His will and for His intervention in this election. My strong sense on Tuesday evening was that the outcome was indeed ordered by the Lord.

Daniel 2:20-21 expresses God’s ability to set in place world leaders. Daniel proclaims, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.”

Throughout the Scripture the Lord gives people what they ask for. Usually He does so in grace (Hebrews 4:16) and other times in judgment (Romans 1, Ex 8-14). Americans have voted to continue the policies of the past four years. This means our nation will continue to become a more secular, big-government, entitlement society that will accelerate its antagonism toward Biblical values.

This may actually be what the American church has needed. The true church can anticipate more challenges to our religious liberties and being pushed further toward the fringes of society. Those who make Biblical stands will suffer greater persecution. The reality is that the church has always been at its best when it has been persecuted and marginalized. I’ve been told that many third world Christians have been praying for the American church to experience greater persecution. We may be entering into an answer to their prayers. Persecution has a tendency to purify the church and to remove the nominal.

European nations have clearly demonstrated the impossibility of maintaining an ever-expanding entitlement society. Eventually the money runs out and no more money can be borrowed. This may be an opportunity for the church to step in to care for those the government no longer has the means to help. When it has been at its best, the church has been notorious for its love and care for those in need.

I apologize if all of this sounds gloomy but this is not a time for plastic Pollyanna and happy platitudes. We need to prepare ourselves for the challenges and opportunities ahead. I hope the future of our nation is brighter than I anticipate but we’ve been on a downward slide for a very long while. Kingdoms come and go but the Kingdom of God is eternal. That’s the Kingdom we would be wise to have our hope in.

So where do we go from this point? Let me give you seven important steps we must take.

1. Acknowledge God’s sovereignty in the election (Romans 13:1).

2. Continue to pray for our nation and our president (1 Timothy 2:1-4, 2 Chronicles 7:14).

3. Avoid all gloating (if the election outcome was to your liking), and gloom (if the election outcome was not to your liking). Acrimony, partisan attacks and hate filled speech have no place in the life of any believer.

4. Unite as the church, despite any political differences. Get our focus off of politics and on the eternal King and the work of His Kingdom.

5. Love and serve in our city and in our nation (Jeremiah 29:7).

6. Genuinely love and care for those whose lifestyles are contrary to our moral values.

7. Live holy lives in the midst of an increasingly perverse world.

The election also clearly demonstrates where we are as a nation. We have moved from apostate Judah to Babylon. The Daniel series is indeed pertinent to our day. It’s important that the church adapt to the new reality. The “culture war” has been lost. More than any time in my lifetime, the American environment is like that of Babylon or of the gentile pagan lands of the book of Acts. In both cases of overwhelming darkness, God’s light broke through in a profound way.

I encourage you to continue to attend our Wednesday evening Gap prayer services. Tonight we will pray for our nation but also join with believers across the world in praying for the persecuted church. Moving forward our Gap prayer services will focus more on spiritual outpouring.

As we’ve been learning in the book of Daniel, we are dual citizens. Though we are to be good citizens of America, our greatest loyalty is to the Kingdom of God. The hope we possess isn’t wrapped up in this world but the One that is yet to fully arrive. In Revelation 11:15 we are reminded of a grand day to come when loud voices in heaven proclaim the reality, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” I so look forward to that day.

Fear Voting for a Mormon? Fear God First!

As I slowly darkened the selection bubble on my 2012 Presidential Mail-in Ballot, I felt a sense of peace. Peace, knowing that the choice I was making was being done in the best interest of the United States of America, and my Christian faith. It wasn’t a decision based upon political party lines, ethnicity, or who seemed to have the best plan to benefit my pocketbook later on. It was a choice that strictly was decided upon by the candidate that best aligned themselves with my beliefs as a follower of Jesus Christ. And that choice was sharply clear to me; that choice was Mitt Romney.

I suspect now that you know whom I voted for, there will be one of two thoughts running through your head. First, you may agree with me and be voting for Mitt Romney yourself. Or, you may be feeling sucker-punched and decrying, “How can a Christian vote for a Mormon?” My answer to you is, “I didn’t.” I didn’t cast my vote for a Mormon, or any other religious label you want to place upon a person or their identity. If I where directing my vote to a religious affiliation, then I would have to be honest and say that this election is not between a Mormon and a Christian; but a Mormon and a person I believe who is not a Christian.

Many of you reading this may be saying, “How dare you say that President Obama is not a Christian.” To you I say, “I’m not, President Obama has proven he is not.” In America we attach label after label upon people. Terms like ‘fat, skinny, rich, poor, young, and old’ are used so flippantly, that there’s no recourse. We throw a label on someone all in an effort to identify them with a stereotype or social class. Case in point the word ‘Christian.’ There are many today that claim to be a Christian, but in reality, it’s just ear service. Claiming to be a Christian doesn’t make you a Christian; any different than sitting in a garage and claiming yourself to be a car makes you a car.

The Bible says, “We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands, … the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:3–4). A Christian, then, is a person who is born again by the Spirit of God, who unequivocally trusts in Jesus Christ and seeks to follow Him in obedience to His Word. For a Christian knows there is no other way to the Father, no other way to be a Christian, than through personal faith in the Son of God and the infallible truth of the Bible. As Jesus Himself confirmed, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Let me turn back to those still grasping at straws who say, “Mitt Romney is a Mormon and Mormonism does not align with Christianity.” Well, you’re right, you may have a point.  Nevertheless, Mitt Romney has not viciously attacked Christianity or vowed to force Christians to betray their Christian faith. As his political record has proven, President Obama is boldly and arrogantly implementing his own anti-Christian agenda. Regrettably, many so-called followers of Christ have realized who Obama really is and what he is trying to accomplish, yet they will still vote for him. Why? Because of a false sense of the truth or their own justification based upon race and not testing the facts through the guise of a biblical worldview.

So here is the assertion. Governor Romney is a self proclaimed Mormon, and President Obama professes to be a Christian. Let’s look at a few political issues through the lens of a biblical worldview and you decide. Before we begin, let me state that failing to consider which candidate values what God values, then we’re voting without conferring with God first. Far too many believers will enter the voting booth this election season without first consulting what God’s Word says. There are certain biblical values at stake in this election that may prove detrimental not only to our Christian faith, but also will have lasting impact on future generations to come. When looking at a candidate we should support the candidate that best aligns themselves with the Christian faith; not who claims to be of the Christian faith.

Let’s say that you didn’t know the religious background of either candidate, but you wanted to vote biblically. First, as a Christian you should support the candidate who is pro-life, and fights to protect the life of the unborn. Next, you should support a candidate that supports the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Who also supports the Defense of Marriage Act. Third, it’s important that we as Christians vote for the candidate that will work to protect our religious freedoms. There’s no question that our religious freedom have been under severe attack under this current administration the last 4-years. And finally, Christians must support a candidate that wholeheartedly pledges to protect and provide security to Israel without waiver. If you are not aware, Governor Romney supports all of these issues, while President Obama arrogantly opposes them outright and defiantly.

So Governor Romney is pro-life. He supports the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. He has vowed to defend our religious freedoms. And finally, he has passionately pledged to protect and defend the security of Israel. And this is a Mormon. Yet, our sitting President rejects to support all of these critical, and biblical based issues. Based on these facts, who aligns themselves closer with our Christian faith? Isn’t it amazing that a Mormon man appears to be more of a Christian than the man that professes to be a Christian?

Our great nation is living in perilous times. We have come to a crossroads, and this very well may be the last election that any of us will be able to vote in. While many may decide they can’t vote for a Mormon, let me be bold in my statement; to vote to re-elect President Obama is to cast a vote against God Himself. You are in effect saying that you know better than God and His Word does not matter. Casting your vote to re-elect President Obama declares before God that you support which he stands for. In effect, you are saying to God that you support the death of children, you support homosexual marriage, you support the destruction of Israel, and thus you support Barrack Obama’s mission to seize our religious freedoms from us.

Many of you may say, “Well I just won’t vote.” Let me tell you emphatically this is an unbiblical approach. The New Testament scripture tells us, “We are citizens of heaven” (Philippians 3:20). But we “Should be good citizens” (Romans 13:1) of the land in which we live. We’re called on by the Bible to participate in the governmental system. And one of the ways we can do that is by responsibly voting. In addition, a great price has been paid by those defending our freedoms to insure our voting privilege. And as a matter of conscience, every believer should register to vote, and then Vote!

In closing, I’m sure that many people out there will disagree with this view. They may even scoff at the notion that I’m judging the faith of our elected President. Yet, what do you call it when Jesus Christ died on the Christ for your sins and mine, and paid the ultimate price for our freedom, yet President Obama’s own political party fights to not have the name of God mentioned in their political platform? Moreover, get’s offended by the mere mention of Jesus’s name? If you attend a church where the pastor is telling you to support President Obama and his political party that tells you it’s okay to disrespect Jesus; you need to leave that church! In the end, make no mistake; people that cast a vote for Barrack Obama are going to have to answer for their vote. You either are serving Jesus, or the democratic party. People in this country are clearly fed up, and they want change. But that change will never come from a man who denies biblical principles and betrays the very moral fiber of the Christian faith. It’s time for Christians to rise up and have the courage to stand not for a political party, but embrace the candidate that closely aligns themselves with our Christian faith. Over the years the Democratic Party has become increasingly more Anti-Christian, Anti-God, Anti-Bible, Anti-Life, and Anti-Marriage. More frightening is that the Democratic Party has shown an alarming opposition to Israel. And as many of us know in regards to Israel, God’s Word declares, “Whoever curses you, I will curse” (Genesis 12:3). Do you want to be cursed for opposing God’s Word?

It is time to take a stand. It’s not about Romney’s religion… it’s about Righteousness. It’s not about a race… it’s about Repentance. And it’s not about rights… it’s about Redemption. Where you cast your vote on November 6th should not be about your party winning the election… but saving this great nation! Vote biblically, for on that day each one of us will be held accountable for which switch we pull in that election booth. And I know without a doubt if it were Christ voting, I know which lever He’d be pulling…

Flee for Your Life!

Listen to me like you’ve never listened to anything else before. The warnings found in the Bible are upon us, “There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God – having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

We have become a generation that believes in God, but does not fear Him. A generation that has created a fragmented version of who God really is; accompanied by a watered-down version of the Gospel, living by the mantra, “I believe in God, but I’ll do whatever I feel like doing.” This generation wants enough of God to keep them out of hell, but just enough of God to get into heaven. They have created a “god” little “g” that believes they are serving Him, but requires no real change in how they live their lives. And why is this? Because they believe in God, but they do not fear Him.

I’m sure many of you have come across these types of believers; someone who believes in God, yet live life like He doesn’t exist. It’s called, “Cafeteria Christianity.” They’ve taken God from an almighty and powerful God big “G” and reduced Him down to this cute little guy that fits into their pocket. It’s like walking down a cafeteria line and saying, “I’ll take a helping of grace and forgiveness please, but you can keep those requirements of obedience and servanthood.” Sound far-fetched? If you are a devout follower of Christ you will immediately agree that what I’m speaking about is not only true; but running rampant in the American church today. And if you are one of these misled Christians that believe this way, let me tell you, you don’t know God. If you are living your life with no real fear of God, it’s because you truly don’t know Him.

In our society today, so many people claim a belief in God, yet how bad is it when the Bible shows that even the demons are smart enough to fear Him, “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror” (James 2:19). Our country has slowly moved from a nation founded upon a biblical worldview to one that has created a generation of “Cultural Christians.” These false converts believe in God but practice a Christianity that requires no real change or obedience. As Christ Himself said, “If you love me, you will obey what I command”  (John 14:15). These are the words that these believers profess they follow; yet their actions say, “I love Christ, as long as I can do whatever I please.”

I used to be one of those lukewarm Christians that shrugged off prophesy being fulfilled and the “We’re living in the last days” comments. But as I’ve come to study and really seek God, he has shown me that we truly are living in the last days. And there is nothing else that is more vital today than laying our lives down for the purposes of God. I shake my head in disbelief as I watch how the Body of Christ has been reduced to nothing more than a Sunday school picnic. But hear me… God is not inviting us to eat Martha’s potato salad or beat Uncle Dave in a sack race. We are in a war… a spiritual war. Not a war about opposing views of Christ or conflicting views of theology. But a war for the souls of mankind; in fact, for many of you, this is a war for your life.

My mind is forever seared by the images and stories of Christian missionaries and leaders who have been martyred for proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Story after story of men being murdered, women raped, and children tortured throughout the world, all because someone feels so much hatred for our beloved savior. And in some cases, many of them willfully placing themselves in harms way, because they felt it was their sense of duty. Each time I read about these horrific tragedies it brings me crashing to my knees and crying out to God, “Please God, never let my sense of duty be any less for the purposes of glorying Your Kingdom.”

We live in a perilous climate of false doctrine and deceptive theology. Where those now, “call evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20). Universal apostasy has overtaken this earth and false prophets now stand on the pulpit proclaiming a watered down gospel that teaches the doctrines of man, and not God. Where Christians who stand up for biblical morality once where revered, now are persecuted and hated as Christ Himself warned, “You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers” (Matthew 24:9).

Body of Christ… the times in which Jesus warned us about is upon us. We have political leaders sitting in power that not only contradict our biblical beliefs, but also are now taking to the streets and professing that those involved in immoral lifestyles should “forcefully push for equality.” They stand with arrogance and proclaim Christianity, all while spewing out twisted scriptural passages and false theology. And while these cultural Christians are attempting to rewrite God’s law, a small army is beginning to rally once again in this great nation. Mighty men and woman of God who are standing up and declaring, “enough is enough!”

Enough sitting by as we feel God’s heart breaking over immoral practices that are attempting to fall under the guise of a civil right. Enough of allowing millions of abortions take place while being shielded by an agenda that speaks of pro-choice; yet thinks nothing of the choice that the innocent child should have. Enough flooding of television and media outlets with messages condoning pre-marital sex and experimentation with free-love. And enough with treating God’s name as a party joke or a blasphemous acronym. If you really want to know what OMG stands for, rest assured; God’s Word promises a day that we will all “appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10). And at that moment, I’m sure all that anyone will be able to say is “Oh… My… God…”

The Lord says, “But you, O man of God, flee these things and…pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22). Beloved church Flee!

Flee from churches where men and not Christ is glorified. Where gospels are preached that only focus on self-gratification, prosperity, and wealth. Flee from those using the name of God to pick your pockets for their own personal gain… Flee!

Flee from churches where no Bible can be found. Where there is no cost in their theology… no repentance from Sin. Flee! They’re not preaching the truth… Flee from churches that do not mention the blood of the cross, where you’re not convicted from your sins. If you can step into the House of the Lord having sin in your life and you still feel comfortable. Run away from it… Flee, it’s unclean!

Flee from churches that are not centered upon prayer, having no reliance on the Holy Spirit. Where more focus goes into big stages, light shows and pyrotechnics in an effort to entertain you like a rock-concert, than where it should be and that’s worshipping the Lord. Flee!

Flee from pulpits filled with men preaching their own political agenda, and not God’s. Preaching ungodly spasmodic movements, and endless empty prophesying. Men more concerned with getting a laugh on the pulpit, than leading their flock back to the foot of the cross. Beloved church Flee!

The Bible is not trivial, but man makes it trivial. God is not trivial, but man makes Him trivial. And His commandments are not trivial, yet man still tries to make it trivial. We as Christ’s followers are bound by an obligation to the objective truth of God’s Word; otherwise how do we dare stand for our Father in Heaven and call ourselves Christians? It’s time for the true Body of Christ to stand up and take our Gospel back. We need to take to the streets and proclaim the truth, no matter the cost. Where is the outcry? Where is the indignation that God’s truth is being trampled upon and twisted to fulfill man’s desires and not Gods? Have we as a community of believers really become more concerned with being labeled “hypocrites” or “out of step with modern principles,” in an effort to avoid conflict? Today I stand and say, NO MORE!

I want to be among those who are standing up and not running away from the conflict, but running into the conflict saying “Flee for your life.” The days of sitting around and just talking about taking action is over. Church, today is the day we begin to take back our great nation. And that begins by fleeing into the streets and declaring His infallible Word to be truth. Get up now and flee… run like you have never run before proclaiming “Flee for your life.” Because in the end, this really is… about your life.

Taking Back America: One Chicken Sandwich at a Time…

On August 1, 2012, Christians and same-sex marriage opponents took the streets and made there way to the nearest Chick-fil-A restaurant. While going to a fast-food restaurant usually means that you are just simply hungry, this day was to become symbolic for the day Americans across the nation decided it was now time to start taking America back. Whether they waited in the drive-thru traffic jam or stood in snaking lines leading up to the counter, each person enthusiastically awaited their turn to show their support for a company not willing to cower to political correctness.

“Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” as it was dubbed, was the idea of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. The concept was simple. Since the CEO of Chick-fil-A Dan Cathy said in an interview that he was a firm backer of traditional marriage, gay rights activists condemned him and asked for their supporters to boycott the fast-food chain. To counter these boycotts, Huckabee wrote on his Facebook page, “Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1.” The result, people flooded Chick-fil-A locations across the country and used their wallets to vote showing where they stood on the same-sex marriage debate; a move that Chick-fil-A representatives now claim to be their highest grossing sales day of all time.

In a day and age where it seems that social issues are now more valued than moralistic principles, the events of this day speaks volumes to where we really are as a country. From Internet media to print newspapers, polls have been construed in an effort to mislead the facts. Readers have been deceived by polls stating “65% of Americans support gay marriage,” or even more misleading are the onslaught of Hollywood media (television, movies, etc.) shoving the gay agenda down our throats. As they try to allude to, it seems like there is this big glass of “Gay Kool-Aid” being passed around and everyone is turning gay. But what are the facts? As GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) states on their own website, “The Williams Institute released new research this week, estimating that around three and a half percent of Americans identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.” Source: http://www.glaad.org/2011/04/08/ap-quotes-anti-gay-activist-in-lgbt-population-story. So through their own admission, GLADD affirms that only a little over 3% of Americans are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. But that’s not how the media tries to convey it… now is it?

So what’s my point? Before I continue, yes, there are many rabbit-holes that this topic can lead down. And let me also state that if you are gay, lesbian, or transgendered I love you as God calls me to. But, just like a murderer, thief, adulterer etc. I do not condone your sinning ways. And no matter how you want to twist scripture to try and condone your lifestyle, the Bible is infallible. God would never declare something specifically as an abomination to Him in one book, yet mislead you to believe that an unspecific scripture can be used to wipe out the other. And just as I would say to the aforementioned people, “Then neither do I condemn you,” as Jesus declared, “Go now and leave your life of sin” (John 8:11).

The reason I entitled this article, “Taking Back America: One Chicken Sandwich at a Time…” is because I think that many Americans have come to the point that they feel like the future of this country is bleak. But if you are reading this, I want to encourage you. In biblical history, there is a great story of hope. In the days of the prophet Jonah, a revival broke out when he began preaching in Nineveh. At first, the revival started small with only the people. When it was all said and done, the king himself was eventually affected and joined in. No matter where you are politically, electing a new president or passing a new law will not bring a sense of revival to our great nation. Revival needs to start with us, God’s people. And what occurred at Chick-fil-A restaurants all over America on August 1st was a wake up call to what it means to be real followers of Jesus Christ. And how America has the capability to harness a revival in these days ahead. Essentially, with just their delicious chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A has led the way for the next chapter to begin in America. Where we take back the values that we have slowly forgotten over the years.

But let’s not get confused. We can’t make a revival “just happen.” Revival is a work of the Holy Spirit; that’s God’s responsibility. That’s why Christ called us to, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We are responsible for evangelism. And preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ is our responsibility. Therefore in these days ahead, we should be praying for an awakening in our country where America turns back to God. Not the “God loves me no matter what I do” type of God that man has created, but the true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the true God that we find in the pages of the Bible. The God that cared so much for us that He was willing to send His Son Jesus Christ to die a horrible death, and rise again from the dead three days later.

America… it’s not too late to turn back to the Lord! As evidence of the “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” shows, Americans still care for the moral well being of this country. A country founded upon Christian values and the covering of a flag that proudly waves under the motto, “In God we trust.” It is time for a spiritual awakening, and this needs to continue to be our prayer. But we need to take action and be deliberate about the work that God has given to us to do. While we may not be able to make a revival happen, we can however light the fire of evangelism; igniting the flames in our lives, in our workplace, in our schools, and in our homes. We can start asking those door-opening questions and share the love of Christ; even with those that feel we are nothing but a bunch of bigots with an archaic mindset.

Many people where misled 4-years ago by slogans we heard like, “Yes We can” or “Change We Can Believe In.” But as time has proven, these have been nothing more than empty promises and an assault on the values that this great nation was founded upon. We as followers of Christ know that we serve “The” Commander and Chief, and His promises declare, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). So in the days ahead, let’s pick up our cross daily and follow Him. Begin to fervently pray for God to do a great work of revival in our great country. And take back this nation by turning away from the dishonoring spirit that America has adopted, and refocus our eyes upon the Lord. For with Him, we know that “Yes We Can” overcome, and He offers real “Change We Can Believe In.”
