Fear Voting for a Mormon? Fear God First!

As I slowly darkened the selection bubble on my 2012 Presidential Mail-in Ballot, I felt a sense of peace. Peace, knowing that the choice I was making was being done in the best interest of the United States of America, and my Christian faith. It wasn’t a decision based upon political party lines, ethnicity, or who seemed to have the best plan to benefit my pocketbook later on. It was a choice that strictly was decided upon by the candidate that best aligned themselves with my beliefs as a follower of Jesus Christ. And that choice was sharply clear to me; that choice was Mitt Romney.

I suspect now that you know whom I voted for, there will be one of two thoughts running through your head. First, you may agree with me and be voting for Mitt Romney yourself. Or, you may be feeling sucker-punched and decrying, “How can a Christian vote for a Mormon?” My answer to you is, “I didn’t.” I didn’t cast my vote for a Mormon, or any other religious label you want to place upon a person or their identity. If I where directing my vote to a religious affiliation, then I would have to be honest and say that this election is not between a Mormon and a Christian; but a Mormon and a person I believe who is not a Christian.

Many of you reading this may be saying, “How dare you say that President Obama is not a Christian.” To you I say, “I’m not, President Obama has proven he is not.” In America we attach label after label upon people. Terms like ‘fat, skinny, rich, poor, young, and old’ are used so flippantly, that there’s no recourse. We throw a label on someone all in an effort to identify them with a stereotype or social class. Case in point the word ‘Christian.’ There are many today that claim to be a Christian, but in reality, it’s just ear service. Claiming to be a Christian doesn’t make you a Christian; any different than sitting in a garage and claiming yourself to be a car makes you a car.

The Bible says, “We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands, … the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:3–4). A Christian, then, is a person who is born again by the Spirit of God, who unequivocally trusts in Jesus Christ and seeks to follow Him in obedience to His Word. For a Christian knows there is no other way to the Father, no other way to be a Christian, than through personal faith in the Son of God and the infallible truth of the Bible. As Jesus Himself confirmed, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Let me turn back to those still grasping at straws who say, “Mitt Romney is a Mormon and Mormonism does not align with Christianity.” Well, you’re right, you may have a point.  Nevertheless, Mitt Romney has not viciously attacked Christianity or vowed to force Christians to betray their Christian faith. As his political record has proven, President Obama is boldly and arrogantly implementing his own anti-Christian agenda. Regrettably, many so-called followers of Christ have realized who Obama really is and what he is trying to accomplish, yet they will still vote for him. Why? Because of a false sense of the truth or their own justification based upon race and not testing the facts through the guise of a biblical worldview.

So here is the assertion. Governor Romney is a self proclaimed Mormon, and President Obama professes to be a Christian. Let’s look at a few political issues through the lens of a biblical worldview and you decide. Before we begin, let me state that failing to consider which candidate values what God values, then we’re voting without conferring with God first. Far too many believers will enter the voting booth this election season without first consulting what God’s Word says. There are certain biblical values at stake in this election that may prove detrimental not only to our Christian faith, but also will have lasting impact on future generations to come. When looking at a candidate we should support the candidate that best aligns themselves with the Christian faith; not who claims to be of the Christian faith.

Let’s say that you didn’t know the religious background of either candidate, but you wanted to vote biblically. First, as a Christian you should support the candidate who is pro-life, and fights to protect the life of the unborn. Next, you should support a candidate that supports the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Who also supports the Defense of Marriage Act. Third, it’s important that we as Christians vote for the candidate that will work to protect our religious freedoms. There’s no question that our religious freedom have been under severe attack under this current administration the last 4-years. And finally, Christians must support a candidate that wholeheartedly pledges to protect and provide security to Israel without waiver. If you are not aware, Governor Romney supports all of these issues, while President Obama arrogantly opposes them outright and defiantly.

So Governor Romney is pro-life. He supports the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. He has vowed to defend our religious freedoms. And finally, he has passionately pledged to protect and defend the security of Israel. And this is a Mormon. Yet, our sitting President rejects to support all of these critical, and biblical based issues. Based on these facts, who aligns themselves closer with our Christian faith? Isn’t it amazing that a Mormon man appears to be more of a Christian than the man that professes to be a Christian?

Our great nation is living in perilous times. We have come to a crossroads, and this very well may be the last election that any of us will be able to vote in. While many may decide they can’t vote for a Mormon, let me be bold in my statement; to vote to re-elect President Obama is to cast a vote against God Himself. You are in effect saying that you know better than God and His Word does not matter. Casting your vote to re-elect President Obama declares before God that you support which he stands for. In effect, you are saying to God that you support the death of children, you support homosexual marriage, you support the destruction of Israel, and thus you support Barrack Obama’s mission to seize our religious freedoms from us.

Many of you may say, “Well I just won’t vote.” Let me tell you emphatically this is an unbiblical approach. The New Testament scripture tells us, “We are citizens of heaven” (Philippians 3:20). But we “Should be good citizens” (Romans 13:1) of the land in which we live. We’re called on by the Bible to participate in the governmental system. And one of the ways we can do that is by responsibly voting. In addition, a great price has been paid by those defending our freedoms to insure our voting privilege. And as a matter of conscience, every believer should register to vote, and then Vote!

In closing, I’m sure that many people out there will disagree with this view. They may even scoff at the notion that I’m judging the faith of our elected President. Yet, what do you call it when Jesus Christ died on the Christ for your sins and mine, and paid the ultimate price for our freedom, yet President Obama’s own political party fights to not have the name of God mentioned in their political platform? Moreover, get’s offended by the mere mention of Jesus’s name? If you attend a church where the pastor is telling you to support President Obama and his political party that tells you it’s okay to disrespect Jesus; you need to leave that church! In the end, make no mistake; people that cast a vote for Barrack Obama are going to have to answer for their vote. You either are serving Jesus, or the democratic party. People in this country are clearly fed up, and they want change. But that change will never come from a man who denies biblical principles and betrays the very moral fiber of the Christian faith. It’s time for Christians to rise up and have the courage to stand not for a political party, but embrace the candidate that closely aligns themselves with our Christian faith. Over the years the Democratic Party has become increasingly more Anti-Christian, Anti-God, Anti-Bible, Anti-Life, and Anti-Marriage. More frightening is that the Democratic Party has shown an alarming opposition to Israel. And as many of us know in regards to Israel, God’s Word declares, “Whoever curses you, I will curse” (Genesis 12:3). Do you want to be cursed for opposing God’s Word?

It is time to take a stand. It’s not about Romney’s religion… it’s about Righteousness. It’s not about a race… it’s about Repentance. And it’s not about rights… it’s about Redemption. Where you cast your vote on November 6th should not be about your party winning the election… but saving this great nation! Vote biblically, for on that day each one of us will be held accountable for which switch we pull in that election booth. And I know without a doubt if it were Christ voting, I know which lever He’d be pulling…

Taking Back America: One Chicken Sandwich at a Time…

On August 1, 2012, Christians and same-sex marriage opponents took the streets and made there way to the nearest Chick-fil-A restaurant. While going to a fast-food restaurant usually means that you are just simply hungry, this day was to become symbolic for the day Americans across the nation decided it was now time to start taking America back. Whether they waited in the drive-thru traffic jam or stood in snaking lines leading up to the counter, each person enthusiastically awaited their turn to show their support for a company not willing to cower to political correctness.

“Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” as it was dubbed, was the idea of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. The concept was simple. Since the CEO of Chick-fil-A Dan Cathy said in an interview that he was a firm backer of traditional marriage, gay rights activists condemned him and asked for their supporters to boycott the fast-food chain. To counter these boycotts, Huckabee wrote on his Facebook page, “Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1.” The result, people flooded Chick-fil-A locations across the country and used their wallets to vote showing where they stood on the same-sex marriage debate; a move that Chick-fil-A representatives now claim to be their highest grossing sales day of all time.

In a day and age where it seems that social issues are now more valued than moralistic principles, the events of this day speaks volumes to where we really are as a country. From Internet media to print newspapers, polls have been construed in an effort to mislead the facts. Readers have been deceived by polls stating “65% of Americans support gay marriage,” or even more misleading are the onslaught of Hollywood media (television, movies, etc.) shoving the gay agenda down our throats. As they try to allude to, it seems like there is this big glass of “Gay Kool-Aid” being passed around and everyone is turning gay. But what are the facts? As GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) states on their own website, “The Williams Institute released new research this week, estimating that around three and a half percent of Americans identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.” Source: http://www.glaad.org/2011/04/08/ap-quotes-anti-gay-activist-in-lgbt-population-story. So through their own admission, GLADD affirms that only a little over 3% of Americans are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. But that’s not how the media tries to convey it… now is it?

So what’s my point? Before I continue, yes, there are many rabbit-holes that this topic can lead down. And let me also state that if you are gay, lesbian, or transgendered I love you as God calls me to. But, just like a murderer, thief, adulterer etc. I do not condone your sinning ways. And no matter how you want to twist scripture to try and condone your lifestyle, the Bible is infallible. God would never declare something specifically as an abomination to Him in one book, yet mislead you to believe that an unspecific scripture can be used to wipe out the other. And just as I would say to the aforementioned people, “Then neither do I condemn you,” as Jesus declared, “Go now and leave your life of sin” (John 8:11).

The reason I entitled this article, “Taking Back America: One Chicken Sandwich at a Time…” is because I think that many Americans have come to the point that they feel like the future of this country is bleak. But if you are reading this, I want to encourage you. In biblical history, there is a great story of hope. In the days of the prophet Jonah, a revival broke out when he began preaching in Nineveh. At first, the revival started small with only the people. When it was all said and done, the king himself was eventually affected and joined in. No matter where you are politically, electing a new president or passing a new law will not bring a sense of revival to our great nation. Revival needs to start with us, God’s people. And what occurred at Chick-fil-A restaurants all over America on August 1st was a wake up call to what it means to be real followers of Jesus Christ. And how America has the capability to harness a revival in these days ahead. Essentially, with just their delicious chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A has led the way for the next chapter to begin in America. Where we take back the values that we have slowly forgotten over the years.

But let’s not get confused. We can’t make a revival “just happen.” Revival is a work of the Holy Spirit; that’s God’s responsibility. That’s why Christ called us to, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We are responsible for evangelism. And preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ is our responsibility. Therefore in these days ahead, we should be praying for an awakening in our country where America turns back to God. Not the “God loves me no matter what I do” type of God that man has created, but the true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the true God that we find in the pages of the Bible. The God that cared so much for us that He was willing to send His Son Jesus Christ to die a horrible death, and rise again from the dead three days later.

America… it’s not too late to turn back to the Lord! As evidence of the “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” shows, Americans still care for the moral well being of this country. A country founded upon Christian values and the covering of a flag that proudly waves under the motto, “In God we trust.” It is time for a spiritual awakening, and this needs to continue to be our prayer. But we need to take action and be deliberate about the work that God has given to us to do. While we may not be able to make a revival happen, we can however light the fire of evangelism; igniting the flames in our lives, in our workplace, in our schools, and in our homes. We can start asking those door-opening questions and share the love of Christ; even with those that feel we are nothing but a bunch of bigots with an archaic mindset.

Many people where misled 4-years ago by slogans we heard like, “Yes We can” or “Change We Can Believe In.” But as time has proven, these have been nothing more than empty promises and an assault on the values that this great nation was founded upon. We as followers of Christ know that we serve “The” Commander and Chief, and His promises declare, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). So in the days ahead, let’s pick up our cross daily and follow Him. Begin to fervently pray for God to do a great work of revival in our great country. And take back this nation by turning away from the dishonoring spirit that America has adopted, and refocus our eyes upon the Lord. For with Him, we know that “Yes We Can” overcome, and He offers real “Change We Can Believe In.”

Think Chick-fil-A is Alone? 9 Other Bible-Banging Companies

Since Dan T. Cathy, President and Chief Operating Officer of Chick-fil-A came out and publicly opposed same-sex marriage, many people have been forced to take a hard look at what companies they will support. While some of the big conglomerates throw a little money at both sides of the debate in an effort to remain neutral; readers may be shocked to find that just because they’re not as outspoken, some companies make a point to be purposeful about their faith.

Here’s a list of some of the more well known religious companies and how they demonstrate their religious freedom. This list is in no particular order.

1. Tyson Foods – While known as the world’s largest chicken company, it is also known for employing the most chaplains in any work force. “Tyson Chaplain Services has chaplains available to team members at numerous plants around the company and in our corporate offices. The chaplains provide compassionate pastoral care and ministry to team members and their families regardless of their religious or spiritual affiliation or beliefs,” according to a banner on Tyson’s website. Tyson not only employs chaplains throughout it’s company, but they also recently funded “The Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace” located at The University of Arkansas http://tfsw.uark.edu

2. Interstate Batteries – Like Tyson Foods, Interstate Batteries also employs it’s own chaplain. On it’s companies corporate website (http://corporate.interstatebatteries.com/giving/) the following is listed; “Part of what makes Interstate a unique company is its unabashed mission to conduct business in a way that honors God. That was Norm Miller’s vision when he became President in 1978. Today as chairman he is not involved in the day-to-day operation, and this allows Norm the time to speak to a variety of audiences interested in how he found the truth of Christianity and how he learned to effectively apply Biblical Principles to create a more successful business. Part of our corporate culture, through a full-time Chaplain and supporting staff, is to provide opportunities for people within and outside our company for Bible study, prayer, and Christian mission. While it is not necessary to be a Christian to be employed, it is a part of the daily work life for Interstate team members.”

3. Herman Miller – This Michigan-based furniture manufacturer who’s most famous for it’s Aeron chair, is grounded in the Reformed Protestant tradition. The company was founded in 1905 by D.J. De Pree, a Christian evangelical. He named the company after his beloved father-in-law, Miller. Today, De Pree’s sons Max and Hugh lead the company and outwardly declare that they too are servant-leaders just like their father. This being said, it’s no wonder that Herman Miller consistently appears on Fortune’s yearly list of The Best Companies to Work for.

4. In-N-Out-Burger – While Chick-fil-A asserts that it’s recipes come from its strong religious values, In-N-Out Burger also prides itself on its ongoing effort to print Bible scriptures on its packaging. In 1948, Harry and Esther Snyder founded the company on their devout Christian faith. It is this devotion that leads the company to continue to promote the Word of God in a very unique way today. Since the late 1980’s, In-N-Out Burger fanatics have been able to find scriptures on their burger wrappers and cups to name just a few examples. For instance, “John 3:16” can be found at the bottom of each drinking cup (pictured). It is the pinnacle verse used throughout all Christian denominations; “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Other verses have been found like Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding,” and also Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” Currently In-N-Out Burger has 275 locations nationwide and growing.

5. ServiceMaster – While the name may not ring a bell for some, this companies residential service businesses may be more recognizable. Names like TruGreen, Merry Maids and Terminix have led the company to achieve over 5,100 franchises around the United States. In 1929, Marion E. Wade founded the company, which derived its name from the concept of Christianity known as “Service thy Master.” According to it’s website (http://www.servicemaster.com/about-us/history), “Wade had a strong personal faith and a desire to honor God in all he did. Translating this into the marketplace, he viewed each individual employee and customer as being made in God’s image – worthy of dignity and respect. His successors, Ken Hansen and Ken Wessner, also shared this view. These three leaders shaped what became our company objectives: To Honor God in All We Do; To Help People Develop; To Pursue Excellence; and To Grow Profitably.”

6. Hobby Lobby – This privately held chain of arts and crafts stores has amassed more than 500 locations nationwide. It was founded in 1972 by David Green and to this day resonates Hobby Lobby’s ethos, “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” And it stands by the assertion “We believe that it is by God’s grace and provision that Hobby Lobby has endured. He has been faithful in the past, we trust Him for our future.” On the companies Vision page (http://www.hobbylobby.com/our_company/ministry.cfm) it states “Hobby Lobby Partners with organizations working to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to all the world.” These organizations include The Alliance Defense Fund, WyCliffe, and Oral Roberts University. One interesting fact, David Green, the companies founder, is the owner of “The Green Collection;” a compilation of more than 40,000 biblical antiquities currently featured via a worldwide traveling exhibition called “Passages.” Like Chick-fil-A, its more than 500 stores are closed on Sundays.

7. Tom’s of Maine – In 1970, along with his wife Kate, CEO Tom Chappell launched a line of natural home products that includes toothpaste, deodorant, soap to name a few. Many people may be surprised to know that Tom Chappelle received his Master’s Degree at Harvard Divinity School and almost didn’t start Tom’s of Maine in order to work in full-time ministry. With advice of one of his professors, Tom decided to treat his business as ministry. To this day Tom’s website states that he personally vows to, “Create a better world by exchanging our faith, experience, and hope.” (http://www.tomsofmaine.com/business-practices/values-beliefs/stewardship-model)

8. Forever 21 – While this company describes itself a fashion-forward clothing store for young ladies, it markets to another demographic; the Christian community. Like, In-N-Out Burger, Forever 21 also emblazons the bottom of its packaging with the scripture John 3:16 (pictured). According to a company spokeswoman, John 3:16 is used as a “demonstration of the owners’ Christian faith.” Additionally, consumers are able to purchase ladies T-shirts at its stores that unapologetically reveal various other Christian messages.

9. Walmart – This last inclusion could be taken by some with a grain of salt. While there is a “They do or they don’t mindset” going around about Walmart’s view on gay rights. In 2008, after Christian Conservative groups threatened a boycott, Wal-Mart left the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, with a spokesperson saying the company had decided not “to support or oppose highly controversial issues.”

Walmart was founded by the Walton family. Sam Walton founded the company in 1962 on the Christian Servant leadership model. The company based its shopping habits on Arkansas churchgoers and developed its business model from there. Today, Walmart is known as being the world’s largest retailer. Since the company was founded on Christian principles, this would explain why Walmart has long-carried Christian books that were once only available at larger Christian bookstores. Today, Sam Walton’s heirs own 48% of the stake in the publicly-traded corporation. This has enabled the Walton family to continue its stronghold over Walmart’s Christian based business practices.

While in recent days the media has tried to assault Chick-fil-A for its stance on gay marriage, it’s nice to learn that other well known companies support Christian values and are active; despite how the media tries to make us believe that Chick-fil-A stands alone in their commitment of biblical principles. I applaud these companies for not wavering in these times of spiritual indifference. At least I know where to grab my next burger, shop for chicken products, or purchase some great household décor. Am I advocating all Christians to support these companies; Yes! In a day and age where moral wrongs are constantly being askewed as a civil-right, we as Christians should go out of our way to support those companies striving to, “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God” (1 Peter 2:16).

Kirk Cameron Under Fire… Again

“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:19). As many of us know, actor Kirk Cameron has transformed himself from the one time 80’s teen-beat idol, to one of today’s most out-spoken evangelical leaders. Just months after coming off the heels of a firestorm of sorts in which Cameron made comments about homosexuality being “Destructive” during an interview on Piers Morgan Tonight; it seems Cameron is now being brought under fire once again.

Recently, NOM (The National Organization for Marriage) named Kirk Cameron as “one of America’s most important champions of marriage.” To accompany this honor, NOM released a video on their website in which Cameron is shown speaking during an interview about the importance of preserving traditional marriage in the United States. Already, this interview has seemed to re-spark the debate against GLAAD and Cameron from months past; even finding media sources and bloggers alike to return to their keyboards in an attempt to revisit the Piers Morgan interview.

Ever since I read the controversy surrounding the Piers Morgan/Kirk Cameron interview, one statement that was made has always left me scratching my head. In their response to Cameron’s interview, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) attacked Cameron saying, “Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation.” As I read this, I was left asking myself one question. To say people of faith believe in the gay agenda makes me wonder what Bible are they reading? We who call ourselves “Believers” accept the Bible as the Infallible Word of God, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Therefore, if a person claims to be a Christian, they must accept God’s Word as truth. While times may change and people become desensitized to social issues, the Bible is clear; “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

As Christians, sin is to be hated; there is no excuse for looking the other way or taking it lightly. There are many sinful acts that occur in all of us. And people who try and place homosexuality as a sin higher than any other are just out right wrong. Nowhere in the Bible does it describe homosexuality as a “greater” sin than any other. All sin whether it is theft, murder, dishonesty, or adultery; it’s still offensive to God. Homosexuality is just one of the many things listed in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 that will keep a person from the Kingdom of God. Therefore, we are called to love all sinners by being faithful in witnessing to them of the forgiveness that is available through Jesus Christ.

If we call ourselves followers of Christ, then we know that the truest act of love is treating someone with respect and kindness even though he/she knows you do not approve of their lifestyle or their choices. Looking the other way is not loving in the eyes of God. We are not called to allow a person to remain stuck in sin. Therefore, “We will speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). While people may stand upon their soapbox claiming Kirk or any other follower of Christ is judging or intolerable to the homosexual lifestyle, understand, it is not hateful to speak out against sin. In fact, the exact opposites are true. We as Christians are called at all times to love the person sinning. But as for the sinful acts, we must refuse to condone, ignore, or excuse them. Kirk Cameron’s remarks are not only biblically accurate, but in my opinion, refreshing in a day and age where Lukewarm Christianity is becoming socially tolerant.
